Crail to Anstruther

Last week we took a trip through to Crail in Fife to walk one of the most popular sections of the fife costal path from Crail to Anstruther.

Crail Harbour

It sounds cheesy to say but Crail really is a picture postcard village! It is one of many pretty fishing villages along the stretch of Fife Coast known as "East Nuke". Located 10 miles south of St Andrews and around a 90 minute drive from Edinburgh it is definitely worth a visit and is a great place to escape the city. Crail has a tiny working harbour known for it's locally caught shellfish, there is also a small sandy beach - prefect for your pooch! On this occasion we skipped the beach and got on the path to walk to Anstruther. The route from Crail to Anstruther is 6.75km, we turned around and walked back to crail making the walk around 13.5km (I say around because we did venture off the path for lunch and ice cream!). It was a fantastic walk and took us around 3 hours in total.

Walking with my Dad

Before reaching Anstruther you pass through Cellardyke, described by many as a hidden treasure. This charming harbour town, is a wonderfully preserved old fishing port lined with cute stone houses, in fact the town was designated a Conservation Area in 1977! I have never been to this little town before and I'm so glad we got the chance to see it on our walk.

Anstruther is the largest of the fishing villages along the East Nuke originally making its fortune from the herring industry. It is popular with daytrippers and holiday makers. One of the most famous attractions is its award winning fish and chips, we didn't have any this time but I've had them before and there definitely worth the trip for! We might just have to make the journey back for some.

Stopping for a spot of lunch

Are you going to share your ice cream...
I knew those puppy dog eyes would work

During the summer months you can take a boat trip out to the isle of May to see the puffins - however dogs are not allowed on the boat or onto the island. So it's not really worth mentioning given this is a dog friendly blog!

Walking back to Crail
Stopping for a swim on the way back
This really was a beautiful walk and one that I would defiantly recommend, people often over look the costal paths of Scotland when planning their visit, but with St.Andrews being a hot spot for tourists I defiantly think its worth the day trip if your in the area.
